I just transferred to a new school. I'm very shy and I don't have much self-esteem. How can I become more confident and make friends?

    Being social, not anti-social
There are a lot of ways to build up your self-esteem. By talking to people, for example, you can tell someone that you like what they have on or their bag or shoes. Also, get involved in a lot of school clubs. There you can meet a lot of new people that you would feel comfortable around. Later, once you get to know everyone, you can start meeting a lot more people.

Don't worry, I just changed last year and will change again this year. These things take time. It probably won't happen overnight. Look and see who does stuff you're interested in. Then, you just have to start hanging out. You have a fresh start. Your classmates don't know anything about you.

    Smile
Smile at everyone. If you're really shy, that's an easy one. I'm REALLY shy and I get freaked out at the prospect of making friends. I know that smiling at someone will make their day, and you'll become more confident when they smile back. There are still some people who won't smile back (I can't stand that. I mean, even if you're upset or in a crummy mood all you have to do is smile!) So all I can say is smile!

    Be Friendly
Talk to lots of people. If one of them turns out to be rude and obnoxious, just forget them! Try talking to people who are by themselves. Sit with people by themselves. If everybody seems to be with their friends, then find somebody in one of your classes and go talk to them. Remember that you might not find your best friend at your school - I don't have a best friend at school.

    Be Yourself!
Don't start by lying about yourself because if people find the truth about yourself, you many not make any friends at all. Try saying hi to at least one person a day. If you can tell they don't want to talk to you, back off. You want to make friends, not enemies!

It's not ALL up to you...
There really is nothing you can do to make people like you, other than to be yourself. I have learned that if people do not like you for you, then they are not who you want to be spending your time with. Those people are fake. Schools have a very wide variety of people, so chances are there will be a few people that share some same interests as you. Those are the people you want.

Look for people in the same class as you. Don't be afraid to talk in class. Don't be shy. Don't hide any aspect of your personality. You could try to talk to another shy, quiet person to also help them out. It's AMAZING what a simple "Hey" can do!

I would think of it as a fresh start and just try to be yourself and make an extra effort to say hi to people. It will happen.
