I totally understand how your boyfriend feels because my dad has cancer. My ex was really sweet and what I liked most was that he would occasionally ask, "How's your dad?" But he wouldn't push it if I didn't want to talk. If I did, he was always there for me and even though he couldn't understand how I felt he would still listen to me rant and rave or cry if I wanted to. What you should do is wait for him to bring up the topic because if he wants to talk about it, he will.
