I like to write poems, but I'm afraid to share them with people. I am afraid everyone will hate what I work hard on. I have a book FULL of them and I express myself through my poems. How can I get over my fear?

I used to be like that, too. So I just created my own anonymous website and put up my work. People left really nice notes in my guest book, and it boosted my confidence in showing people I actually knew.

Are you crazy?! You should totally show people your work. Trust me, they will just admire your talent. Don't be so modest! The worst they can say is they don't like it. Art, as we all know, is subjective and a matter of taste. So even if one person doesn't like your poetry, it doesn't mean somebody else won't love it!

You could look around at your local cafes and see if any have an open mic night for poetry. You could share some with people while you're online. (That's how I share mine.) And of course you can always post them on the poetry board here. I do that, too, and it's cool cause I've gotten some really great responses from other girls. Good luck!

I had the same problem. I was really scared no one would like what I did. But finally I took the plunge and entered it in a contest. I won honorable mention and editor's choice. You just have to put yourself on the line sometimes. If one person doesn't like it, so what. That's just one person's opinion. All that really matters is that you like your work. Once you convince yourself it's good, you'll be confident enough to share it with others.

You don't have to share your poems! It's as simple as that. Sharing poetry is like sharing the innermost part of your soul. If you have any inhibitions about it, you really shouldn't. Keep your writings to yourself as long as you feel uncomfortable about sharing it. If you really, really have to share them, why not send them into gURL.com? :-) See how you feel after that.

One idea is to join a creative writing class at school or someplace else in the community. In class, you can meet other people who like to write and you can get helpful feedback on your writing. I was in a creative writing class last year. I was really shy and nervous that my writing wasn't good but those fears went away. People read my writing and gave great advice. They told me what they liked and didn't like but not in a negative way. It's a good experience and it can help you feel more comfortable sharing your writing.

I write poetry, too and I used to feel the same way. Then one of my friends started emailing me some of her poetry. Now we exchange all the time. We give tips and make changes. I guess her courage gave me the strength to share. You just need someone to start exchanging poetry with. You could even post some on this site's shout out boards for comments and such. Also, please gURLgram me some because I love reading and commenting on poetry that other girls have written. Good luck!
