I'm a goth and I'm proud of it, except when my step-mom has to see what I'm wearing and says, "You're beautiful and you make yourself look ugly!" If someone walks by wearing a tank top and jeans, just guess what she says: "Why can't you look like so-and-so?" It's not fair, because everyone else in my house gets to be an individual except me. Why can't I be proud of my gothic tastes?

Let your step-mom know that you don't want to compromise your personality or style. If she still doesn't understand, give her an example. One such as "How is it bad to compromise yourself for a boyfriend but not for a stepmother?"

You're not the only goth out there who has problems. I wrote my mom a small essay on why I dress like I do, and told her that she was discriminating against her own daughter by acting the way she was. She's off my case now, except for the occasional, "Isn't this shirt cute?"

Parents want you to look perfect because they don't want people whispering behind your back. I just tell my mom that I am my own person and I don't care.

I went through the same thing when I was in high school. I was part punk, part goth, and my stepmother's comments were way worse than anything I got picked on for at school. Right now you are creating the identity that will follow you into adulthood. You should be very proud of the fact that you are not afraid to be who you want to be.

Whenever I'm around my parents the studded necklaces that I use as bracelets come off, a hat covers my "colorful" hair, and my homemade atheist tee hits the closet like a hurricane in Florida. I know that's a big inconvenience and I've started thinking of it as Makeup For Hiding You. But once my parents are out of the pic...I'm me. Loud, angry music; dark makeup; atheist tee and all.
