Safety
The most important thing in any situation is safety. If you can't feel safe in your school, it will be that much harder to learn and get a proper education. I wish I had that when I was in high school. Especially after events like Columbine, it's nice to see the schools are doing more to protect their students.

we used to have one (idk why we dont now) and it was kinda annoying because we had to unzip our purses, bookbags, open binders (etc) and let people search through it. it kinda got on my nerves but it could prevent someone from bringing a gun.

I'dd have to go with digg.. theres a lot of knive stuff around where I live and if we didnt have metal dectorss then a lot more could get into the schoool.. but its annoying cuz Ive had my cell phone confiscated like I dont know how many timess....

I'm sorry, but kids are dumb. Even if a gun is brought for just to hurt one person, how many other casualities could happen because they have no idea to aim properly. I have heard more then once about people in my school having guns, they have all been for fights after school, but the fact is is that they were still there. Right in the lockers and none of the administration knew. People are cowards these days and instead of a fist fight they have to use a knife or gun, it's bullshit. I do not want to get hurt because some dude looked and the next dude's girlfriend. We, kids, we are retarded and need to be put back in line.

They're only trying to insure your safety. Though, using them to find cellphones is dumb. As long as your phones on silent, i dont see that as a problem.

I think at my school we need them. People get shot all time time around here and we have drug test once a month. We have so maney gang members here it just makes me want it. But at the same time they are calling us viloent imature little children.

High Schools need them now
Kids can stick anything in their backpack, pockets or purses now. No one should be afraid to go to school. Isn't it bad enough that gun laws aren't strict enough?

Well, on one hand, our school wants to install metal detectors, and I'm not happy about it. It would make me feel like my every move is being watched. It would make me feel unsafe and violated. On the other hand... they are marjorly important. I live only a couple miles away from Columbine, and when I hearrd about the shootings, I was terrified. If Columbine had metal detectors a while back, maybe Harris and Klebold wouldn't have been able to massacre the school. In conclusion, I am not happy about metal detectors, but lving so close to Columbine has made me understand their importants. There has been 3-4 fatal high school shootings this WEEK in the USA alone. In a violent world, we may not like the metal etectors, but the point it, they are needed.

metal detectors are good to have incase a kid brings a gun to school!but these days some schools are using them to see if a kid is carrying a cell phone...which isnt right becuase kids should be able to call there parents if an emergancy accures!

I think it is a good idea to help students feel safe at schools, but I feeling like if anyone <i>really</i> wanted to commit a school shooting r anything of the ora I think they would find a way to do it--metal detectors or not. But metal detectors also make me feel like "big brother is watching," and that I have something to hide or that I'm a suspect to school officials, which I'm not!
So I guess that's a dis.

I guess it's okay, but seriously: metal watch, phone, things on clothes, just a hassle. If someone does take something dangerous too school, just pray they don't use it...
At school, we need our school I.D. It's like "um, lady, you see us EVERY day. Why do I need an I.D. to get in?" And if you don't have one, you have to walk (outside) all the way to the other side of the school just so they can say "have it next time" and assign you a lunch/detention. WTF?!

I go to a school where we have at least one bomb/gun (sometimes knife) threat a month. I'm still against metal detectors. They would be sooo annoying, time consuming, and would probably make the day go longer! No one's ever been hurt at my school after a threat-- and we usually get a day off! I have no problem with that!

Ok, I HAVE metal detectors in my school because my school was named the #1 impact school (meaning, we can't behave ourselves)... and it sucks! no one ever shot anyone in my school, and besides, if you want to kill someone that bad, you wait for them outside with a gun or knife or whatever, while everyone coming out of school is unarmed. Plus we're not allowed phones, ipods, lighters, certain jewlery, blahblahblah. My friend has a two and a half hour ride to school, and he can't even have his music. And no phones in case of emergency. It's not right. You never know what can happen in school, or while going home or whatever. Its an invasion of privacy. Oh, we are also not allowed to have OPEN drinks.. condoms (aparently the detectors pick up on it) or anything. What is the point??

yeah, kids might bring guns to school, but if we can stop the bringing-guns-to-school thing before it starts, then maybe kids won't bring them st school. lots of kids get bullied, and sometimes they want revenge, so they bring a gun to school. there has to be a way to stop it before it starts. i recently read an article pertaining to this subject on msn and frankly, metal detectors are a useless waste of money. an example of this is one shooter shooting all security guards at the metal detectors, walking right thru it and shooting many more students and teachers. and another shooter, whose school didn't have metal detectors was asked by media "what would you have done if there had been a metal detector?" and he replied with "i would have walked right thru it." i also would like to point out that anyone who watches the boondock saints would know exactly how to get past a metal detector ANYway. was schools need to focus on is combating the actual source of the violence, which is bullies, cliques, and teachers' indifference. only by solving the problem before it start will violence in school actually stop.

OK LET ME SAY THIS BEFORE METAL DETECTORS I USED TO GET SO EARLY TO CLASS AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT IN THAT LONG AS$ LINE.dont get me wrong i do go early but there is a boys and girls line and there r more girls than boys at my school.N there is like only 3 machine working wHERE THEY R LIKE 4,000 students!!!.N now THEY R MORE FIGHTS THAN EVER!! WE CAN'T EVEN GO OUTSIDE TO GET OUR OWN FOOD SO MANY OF US WONT EAT DURING THE ENTIRE SCHOOL DAY WHICH IS REALLY BAD.N the thing that i dont get is that why isn't the school who is our neighbor getting metal detectors when i have seen many young girls and boys smoking cigarettes and marihuana(THAT IS FUKIN ILLEGAL WTF!!!!).
