i'm from the south and i'm not racist or any other crap like that. to me, the confederate flag represents pride for my home, for taking pride in what you do - doing the best you can, even if others don't think it's good enough. God, good home, and good life.

Im all for the confederate flag. Im a southern through and through I even have the southern accent! And I dont see why people hate it. Everyone that does thinks it stands for slavery and that is NOT what it stands for. It stands for the confederate states when they broke away from the Union. And its a part of history and heritage. We dont get rid of anybody elses heritage so I dont think its fair to get rid of mine. Ill wear a confederate flag proudly! And if anyone has anything to say about it well thats yalls opinion.

I agree with crbrown1. That flag does not represent slavery, it represents the Confederates breaking away from the Union. I am black and i am not, in any way, offended by the confederate flag. i am, however, offended by ignorance and the people that do think that it is a symbol of slavery in the US

Times have changed
The rebel flag means something different now than it did during the war. It has ALWAYS represented the south. Now it represents the south MINUS the racism. And, for the record, I was never in a war, so it has nothing to do with my "refusal to admit defeat".
HOW THE HELL CAN SOMETHING AS TRIVIAL AS FABRIC BE A BEACON OF RACISM?
Also, if the south thinks the SOUTHERN flag means something, then we're right. Nobody can dictate a region but the region itself.

Yeah. I am. And my family fought in the Civil war for the Confederate side, but that doesn't mean we're racist. You would not believe how many times I get asked that. Yes, some Southerners had slaves and beat them, but not all of us did. Saying things like "The Confederate flag is racist!!" is like saying that all blacks are Gangsters or even all cheerleaders are B******. Think about it.

i am all for the confederate flag. first of all, it is part of freedom of speech. second, it doesn't stand for racism or white supremist. it does stand for southern pride. and for those of you who claim that the south started the civil war for slavery...y'all are dead wrong. the south seceded from the union to start it's own confederacy based on states rights. the southern states believed that the state legislatures have the power to dictate what the state does not the federal government. slavery may have just been one of the reasons why the south favored states rights, however the south also believed in low tariffs, no income tax, and an agrarian society.
just b/c some extremists choose the confederate flag as their symbol, it should not tarnish the general idea of what the flag really represents.
and duh the klan would use it. they were all ex-confederates who hated the united states. duh! what else are they gonna use as a symbol?
just realize that not all southerners are like them.
last thought: during the civil war there where even slaves still in some parts of the north, so don't link the confederate flag with pro-slaveryites.

ok i have to say the confederate flag does not stand for slavery and you closed minded people who believe that need to be quiet. I see the flag as part of my southern heritage and i am proud to be southern! My family fought in the Civil war over states rights not slavery. I am proud to be American and i take pride in the American Flag also . And we know we lost the war we are not denying that we did just because we keep the flag around we want to keep our history alive. I'm not racist at all and don't call people that just because you see things differently.

The confederate flag's only purpose is to produce and instill hate. It's design is insensitive and inflammatory. The confederate flag started out as a racist symbol, and it will always be one. It's a lie that it's about southern heritage ... unless you mean racist southern heritage. Unless you mean the heritage that enslaved people, raped, tortured, broke families about, and culturally deprived people.

Again, it's not a sign of Southern Pride, it's a sign of pride for the Confederacy (which no longer exists, by the way). The Confederacy was a group of states that wanted to secede from the United States, primarily because of the election of Abraham Licoln on the platform that slavery should be abolished. The Confederacy was formed because it opposed the end of slavery, not because they thought the south was cool.

It's a little bizarre to see confederate flags still displayed in the South. You guys lost the war, ok?
I try to think of it as a symbol of the South and of Southern pride, rather than refusal to admit defeat.

I'm a Southerner, born and raised, but I DO NOT promote the Confederate flag. That's like people flying the Mexican or Canadian flag of Independence Day; wtf? Its disrespectful to the country we live in. Also, it gives people the wrong idea about how we are as a people in the South. Some people still think we ride horses or tractors to school, marry our cousins, live in trailer parks drinking beer all day, and look forward to a ho-down on Friday nights. Which is TOTALLY UN-TRUE. Please, stop promoting the idea that we're all idiots down here.
