does telling the depressed to buck up work?

a psa about depression from ijane inc., copyright 2003.

In this psa, Kate Hudson tells sufferers of depression to "reach through your cloud, work through the void, and get help. Your choice." It puts the burden of action squarely on the depressed. Do you think this approach will help?

    I think it works
Having been seriously depressed before, I know that you DO have to make the effort to seek help, because if not you will be swallowed up by it and that's the worst feeling in the world. I'm in therapy now, and I've become so much happier in life. Recently, though, I've been afraid that I'm slipping back into my old habits. It's scary, depression is.

It's not just telling depressed people to "buck up". It';s telling them to take action and work past their depression, and that helps. I have had major depression for a few years. Medication is not a miracle cure, it MIGHT help some of the symptoms, and therapy helps when you have extra stress and need to vent, but in the end, people need to find a way to deal with their depression. That's just the truth. I didn't get over depression by sitting around and taking meds, I actually had to work hard on getting past it and finding new ways to cope.

    psych class
well. we just finished studying psych disorders in my class. just telling a depressed person to "buck up" doens't help by that alone. unless it is minor depression [which everyone goes through], it needs to be treated with therapy and/or drugs. it's not as simple as telling someone to be happy. a majorly depressed person needs help getting better. it's like when you pull a muscle, you need to go through therapy and be put on a few drugs to help the process.

I think this clip is motivating. Kate is not saying "Suck it up emo", she is letting people know that there is hope and help; and not only do others help you, but you have to find a way to also help yourself. Depression is not an easy thing to get through, and she is trying to help others find the light.

well as someone who deals with depression a LOT...
I think its actually pretty much right. A lot of people will refute the whole, they have responsibility in this too thing, because they don't actually know what its like so they assume its bad enough that they shouldn't be at all to blame for it. My mom, both my sisters, my dad, and more than likely me (I'm 17 so no ones ever diagnosed me yet since many of the symptoms of depression are very similar to, well, being a melodramatic teenager) have depression. The truth is that depression is, as diseases go, a little more like alchohalism than, I don't know, cancer or something else that runs on its own. I'm not saying that people cause depression to themselves at all, thats not the part of alchohalism that I'm talking about. What I mean is, its largely up to you to seek help. Sometimes you'll be lucky enough to have people in your life who will get help for you, but, like the ad says, its up to you to accept it if your so lucky. I know this is just my opinion, but I like the ad and what it says, and I think I've dealt with depression enough that that should hold some water.

HA! I have a clip about your title for this clip, gURL. That's misleading, Kate Hudson isn't telling the depressed to "buk up," she's telling them that there is help out there and it's your choice to take action against it, or to cooperate with someone who's trying to take action for you. She's not sitting around snarling and saying "Ah, suck it up, you pathetic losers" or anything like that, she's just pushing for action on someone's part to help those with depresison. Besides, she's probably just reaing off of a script, and maybe she had a hand in writing it, but I doubt her thoughts were to put down all the clinically depressed people and tell them to stop whining or anything like that. So lay off on this one, there's no legitimate cause for alarm.
