is "voting for old people"?

a t-shirt from Urban Outfitters, copyright 2004.

Urban Outfitters' new t-shirt campaign has stirred up controversy in what is shaping up to be a heated election year. While some critics say the t-shirt is "the wrong statement at the wrong time," Urban Outfitters claims the shirt speaks the truth about young people being jaded by (and left out of) the political process. What do you think? Does all of the politicians' talk of Social Security and prescription drug benefits for the elderly, tit-for-tat sound-byting, and their seemingly obligatory blow-dried hairdos turn young folk off from voting? If you could vote, would you?

i think the shirt is stupid and the arguments that people are making for it being ironic or whatever is just dumb no one should wear a shirt like this even when they under 18.

    geez...-_-
I would understand wearing it before you're eighteen as an ironic tee, but anyone old enough to vote shouldn't wear this shirt. i believe that if you don't vote you're saying that you don't care the direction this country goes. and if u don't vote, u can't complain about the president. that's just my opinion. i'm not against the you-have-to-be-eighteen voting rule since i think that before you're eighteen you might not be able to understand and might be more persuaded by your parents than the candidate. but still.

    irony much?
i have this shirt. mostly i wear it as a joke, because I'm not old enough to vote yet. (eight months, baby!) it's ironic. the intention is to be contrary--a sort of backlash to all this "vote or die" stuff. just as people have the right to vote, they have the right to not vote. vintagevantage.com, which sells this shirt, has a bunch of pictures wearing this shirt to their polling places. when the time to vote comes around, i will be wearing my shirt to the polls, with my "i voted" sticker. let people make of it what they will. i think it's funny.

    ...
I think that shirt is just plain ignorant. Making a statement or not, it's still not good.

    Nope
Our generation will be in charge soon and in my opinion the "old people" left us with quite a mess to clean up.

i think in a way its very true... i think they should lower the voting age to 14-16 i think its important to know (and have a say in) whos running the country we live in.

    Who would think that?
How could voting be for old people? I think it's stupid for people not to vote. I mean they gave you the right to vote for a reason and a certain age and your not going to take advatage towards the stituation? Plus some people get mad when they dont get the right president... like Bush. But it's partly your fault for not voting.

    I don't agree
I don't agree with Urban Outfitters slogan, but I can understand why they would promote it. Politicians tend to forget about the younger generation. They use words and tactics we don't understand and can't comprehend. They also don't market toward us. They market toward the 30 and older crowd. It was a big success when P.Diddy did the "vote or die" campaign....he should do it again to show the younger generation how important voting is and how their choice can impact the entire nation.

    vote
im fourteen and not allowed to vote yet but i still try to encourage those who are at the age that is legal to vote VOTE! everything that affacts the "old people" affects us too so why not spread our opnion with our vote I truly believe that every vote matters and I mean every vote so i encourge everone who is allowed to vote! what is their to lose like the famous Diddy said "VOTE OR DIE" lol this shirt i agree just to me shows how us young people are not getting out their vote i would totally wear that shirt lol
