When it comes to dating, do you prefer to be pampered? The reason we ask is that your dating situation seems similar to that of the girls of Victorian England! Go ahead--throw on the ruffles, frills and lace, and let those admirers come to you the way they used to do it in good old England.

Imagine your admirers sending you bouquets of flowers which serve as secret messages that would be improper to write. In Victorian England, different flowers held different meanings. A gardenia meant ecstasy, a marigold meant sacred affection, and of course a red rose declared "I love you."

Some Victorian customs were not that different from contemporary American ones. For instance, the diamond ring, which symbolized innocence in Victorian England, became popular as an engagement stone during that era.

And dances were a very popular place to meet and get to know other young people. Couples were allowed to dance together but not exclusively; dancing with the same person more than three times in one night was considered very forward.

One pronounced difference: In Victorian England, graveyards were considered mysterious and romantic, and were popular places to take a lady when courting.
