So here I am in the exam room. Most doctors have a talk (about your medical history, etc.) with you first before you put on the gown and lay back on the table.

You should have your first internal exam when you're 18 or when you start to think seriously about having sex, whichever comes first.

Q: When should I have my first gynecological exam?

A: I usually tell patients to come see me if they're having problems with their periods, and that could be at any age. My youngest patient is eleven years old, and my oldest patient is ninety-seven!

They should also come see me if they're thinking about becoming sexually active. I think that a frank discussion about contraceptives and STDs is good to have before becoming sexually active. Oftentimes patients will come after they become sexually active and/or when they're seeking different birth control options other than condoms.
