  Dear Heather,

For a few days, my nipples have been hurting. Just wearing a bra causes pain. Today a teeny tiny bit of blood came out of my right nipple. I used Chapstick on my nipples and even put toilet paper in my bra to help ease the pain, but it never goes away. Is this normal?

Hi.

Pain is generally the body's way of telling us there's something going on--something we may need to address.

According to Dr. Karen Rosewater, there can be many reasons for breast pain. Some have to do with the skin itself, and others have to do with the breast under the skin.

There are fairly minor things that affect the surface of the breast, like eczema (inflammation of the skin). I would put chafing and cracking into this category as well. Both can be painful--especially if the irritation becomes infected or if it is constantly irritated by a bra or other clothing.

The presence of prolonged pain and bleeding may indicate something more serious.

Even if your condition is something that can be easily addressed, I'm sure you want to get relief and prevent it from getting worse. Please see a physician or another health care provider who can properly diagnose your condition right away.

Don't be shy to seek help because the pain is located in your breast. It's just another part of the body.

Take care.

Take care,
heather
