  Dear Heather,

I want to break up with my boyfriend. The last time I tried to break up with him, I told him I just wanted to be friends and he totally flipped. He started calling me a lesbian, a slut and other mean things. Later, I found out that he was only saying those things because he loved me. How do I go about breaking up with him so he doesn't say all those mean things again, and accepts the fact that I don't love him back?

Hi.

Your boyfriend demonstrated a real lack of maturity by calling you names. Saying mean things is not done out of "love," but rather a real desire to strike back at a person you're angry with.

As unpleasant as it may be, there is really no way to keep him from saying nasty things to you if you break up with him again. In fact, he's likely to do the same thing he did last time. But this time you will be prepared and you can choose to react differently.

This time, if you are truly serious about breaking up with him, don't take him back. Sticking to your guns is the best and probably the only way to communicate the message that you mean what you say: you're not interested in being with him any longer.

Good luck.
