  Dear Heather,

When should a sexually active girl start douching? I don't have sex on a daily basis, but I have heard that some girls douche when they start having sex. Should I start?

Hi.

I'm glad you asked. There is no need to douche at any age because the vagina has a natural mechanism for cleaning itself.

According to Dr. Karen Rosewater, douching can actually cause more harm than good because it changes the natural environment of the vagina, making it more prone to infections. You see, the vagina houses natural microorganisms that live in balance with each other. When one type is killed off by douching (or the use of certain medications), others may grow out of control and cause infection.

Most people douche because they or their lovers do not like their smell. The crotch has a natural, healthy aroma, which is a mixture of moisture and musk from the glands around the thighs. Keeping the crotch clean and dry will usually help in that department.

However, having a strong odor (like a fishy smell), coming from your crotch can actually signal a vaginal infection. The problem will not go away in response to douching. It may get worse. Instead, such an infection should be treated by a gynecologist or other health care providers.

Stay healthy.

Take care,
heather
