  Dear Heather,

I get so stressed I feel like I'm going to throw up. Why is this happening?

Hi.

It sounds like you're experiencing an extreme amount of stress. I wonder what's been going on in your life that has caused you to be so overwhelmed. And also, how you deal with stressful situations in the moment.

Psychologist Sharon Budd says, "The mind and body are linked. Often, people experience physical sensations when anxious or angry. These include disturbed sleep or appetite, stomach pains or nausea, intestinal problems and headaches."

You could try being more assertive about expressing your frustrations when they occur. It might help to actually identify the causes of your stress and actively look at ways to solve these issues. Not dealing with them may only cause your anxiety to deepen. Dr. Budd says that visualizations, deep breathing or exercise may also help reduce stress.

Check with a doctor to make sure there is no physical cause for the nausea. If you have access to a psychologist at school, please talk to him or her about this. School counselors can make referrals or offer short-term assistance with such matters.

All the best.

Take care,
heather
