  Dear Heather,

I'm 5'1 and I have a 36D size bra. I have been teased and basically I'm not proportioned. I have a slight hunch in my back and my bra straps dig into my shoulders. I am not overweight. My mom has been asking me if i want a breast reduction. What do you think I should do?

Hi.

Many women and girls who have large breasts complain of constant back pain, bras cutting into their shoulders and back, constantly "sticking out" like a sore thumb in public. But the decision whether to actually go through with a breast reduction is a very personal one.

One thing I would ask is: Is this something you've wanted for yourself, or do you feel as though your mother is really the one who wants it for you? Since you will have to live with your decision, I would recommend taking time to think about what you really want and to get a surgical consultation that will provide you with the facts surrounding the operation.

I'm not sure how old you are, but Dr. Karen Rosewater, who specializes in medical care for adolescents, says most surgeons won't perform breast reductions until a patient is at least 18 years old, as breast reductions may have serious consequences. There is always the risk of complications from the surgery--it's a major procedure that can take up to 5 hours long--and women who have had breast reductions often find that they are unable to nurse their babies because it is sometimes necessary to remove and reposition the nipple during the procedure.

Since your mother seems open to the idea, ask her to help you find a surgeon (or better yet, a few surgeons) who will give you the low-down before you lay down.

Take care,
