  Dear Heather,

Is it true that condoms have powder on them and some females are allergic to it and can get UTIs (urinary tract infections) from it? Are there condoms that don't have it? Please let me know, I think that is what is occurring with me.

Hi.

I'll start by saying that, if you're finding yourself with frequent UTIs or vaginal irritation, it's probably a good idea to see a doctor. But to answer your question, physician Karen Rosewater says urinary tract infections usually have to do with irritation caused by the friction on the urethral opening during vigorous intercourse, not the type of condoms used. Some woman are more susceptible to UTIs than others, so of you feel this is the case with you, there are a few things you could try. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated, and urinate before and after intercourse. Some women who are prone to getting UTIs also find that taking a cranberry supplement as a preventative measure helps. You can usually find cranberry tablets wherever herbal remedies are sold.

As an aside, condoms generally do not come with a powder (though the powder on latex gloves does cause allergic reactions in some women). Many condoms do however, come with spermicidal lubricants, which may cause irritation. If you think spermicide may be adding to your discomfort, try lubricated condoms that do not have spermicides--you may have to read the label carefully to find them. A better way to go would probably be buying unlubricated condoms and using a separate lubricant from a bottle. That way you can replenish the lube periodically to reduce the friction against your urethral opening during sex. Lube can usually be found in the "feminine products" aisle of the grocery store or the "family planning" section of your local pharmacy.
