  Dear Heather,

I am homeschooled right now but had decided I wanted to go back to a regular school for the end of the year. Well, now I'm having doubts. I am overly stressed, because I have to catch up with algebra to get credits, and math/algebra is not my best subject. I also need time to rest before I go back.

On top of all this, there is more that is buggin' at me, and I do not know what it is exactly. When under this stress, I skip meals for one or a few days, and I just totally feel as though I have no way out. This is the reason I wanted to come to homeschool: to take a break, revive myself, and not feel so stressed, but it seems as though I am going to feel the same way if I do not decide.

Should I put off the stress of going to back to school with stress, and finish out my year at home (plus my ma is recently worried of all the school violence) or go back? Thank you very much for all your time and help.

Hi.

It sounds from your letter like there are a lot of reasons why going to a regular school would be stressful for you right now, but you don't explain why you decided to return to regular school in the first place.

Making decisions can be stressful, but one idea for making it easier is to make a list, on paper, of all the pros and cons of staying in homeschool or returning to a regular school. Think about what is important to you both in the short term and the long term. Socially, things are probably quite different in a homeschool than they are in a regular school. Academically, consider which experience is giving you the better education. Ask yourself what your long-term goals are and how either school can help you get there. If your list is heavily in favor of one program over another, that will give you an idea about which way you are leaning.

Also, there may be a way to combine the best of both options. Could you finish out the current year at home and then return to a regular school next year? If you decided to go to a regular school and it didn't work out, could you return to homeschool? Again: Why did you want to leave homeschool? Are there ways to resolve those issues while staying in homeschool?

It might also be a good idea to think about where all the stress is coming from and think about ways to manage it. Exercise, self-expression through writing or art, deep breathing and/or talking about your fears with someone are all different ways to help deal with stress that you may find helpful.

Keep in mind that some things are beyond your control. According to research by the National Center for Education Statistics, crimes at public and private schools have either stayed the same or gone down in recent years, compared to the early 1990s. While there have been some horrific stories about violence at schools, such occurrences, while scary, aren't the norm.

Take care,
heather
