  Dear Heather,

I talk to someone on the internet who claims he's someone famous, someone really famous that we all know and I don't know if I should believe him. He sounds really real and I want to believe him. We're trying to meet really soon, at one of his concerts. He wants to pick me up from my house... What should I do? Give him my address? Or forget him? I really like the guy. He's sweet, and like a big brother to me. I don't wanna hurt his feelings. Please help me!!!!!

Hi.

It can be very exciting to meet someone online, especially someone who claims to be famous. As the saying goes, though, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. It's wise, especially when your safety could be in question, to be suspicious of strangers from the wide, wide world of the internet. It's very easy for a person on the internet to pretend to be anyone they wish.

Maybe this person is who he says he is, but more than likely he is not. In this situation, you need to look out for number one and remember that there are worse things in the world than hurting someone's feelings (like getting hurt yourself). When you get involved in any online relationship, be aware that:

1) There are predators out there. Giving out personal information such as your full name, address, phone number or the name of your school, can be dangerous.

2) There is a possibility that this person could be lying about everything. A person's online persona may have little or no basis in reality.

If you do decide that you want to meet this person face-to-face (which doesn't really seem like the wisest decision), carefully consider whether there might be some way to verify his identity and be sure that any meeting happens in a public place with other people present. Also, make certain that you tell someone where you will be and bring a parent or trusted adult along with you.

Take care,
heather
