  Dear Heather,

At school dances I am afraid to dance because my butt is kinda big and I don't want guys to make fun of me. I am a really good dancer though. I have been dancing since I was 2 and have taken tap, jazz, pointe, ballet, hip-hop and musical theater. Will guys really laugh at me?

Hi.

It sounds to me like you would be one of the best dancers at a school dance, and that once you got out on the dance floor you might even forget any worries about your body!

Of course, whether or not that's true, what you are going through can't be easy. Being confident about your body is important. And there's so much pressure to look a certain way.

One thing that can be helpful is remembering that anyone who laughs at someone else's body is locked into a really narrow idea of what's beautiful. Not that this is necessarily an issue in your case, as plenty of people prefer big butts over smaller ones.

I suggest that you consider going ahead and doing some dancing. Maybe try it out somewhere that feels safer to you than a school dance, such as another school's dance, a party or even at home. You might also try checking out some of these resources about body image.

See how it goes. If you start to feel you're ready to try your own school dance, my advice is to take it slowly--and to remember this: whatever your dance training and whatever anyone else says or does or thinks, the idea is to have fun!
