  Dear Heather,

School is out and I just found out that a lot of my friends are moving away, even my best friend! I'm scared that when school starts again, I won't have any friends to sit with or just to hang out. Also, it's hard for me to make new ones because I'm kinda shy. What should I do?

Hi.

That sounds rough. Moving can be especially hard when you are in high school--you're old enough to develop important friendships but too young to have much say about who goes where.

The first thing I suggest is that you don't panic. Big changes like this can be good, even exciting. Maybe try and look at what's happening as a chance for a fresh start. This could make you open to something or someone you might have missed if things were just the same for you as last year.

But for now it's summer. Why not focus on that? Who knows how you'll feel in the fall?

Meanwhile, I recommend trying to keep in touch with people who still mean something to you after they move away. Especially if you do end up having fewer friends at school for a while, email, letters and phone calls are nice to come home to. Not to mention the long-term benefits of building close friendships.

Take care,
heather
