Shopping would wind me into a ball of stress this time of year; instead, I spend the time transforming objects I already have into festive gifts. Here is my box-transforming recipe; the same idea can be applied to other objects.

Materials: An old cigar box, shoebox or any box (cardboard and wood work best), preferably with a lid; paint; markers; glitter; magazines; photos; Elmers-type glue; scissors.
Instructions: 1. Find a container you would like to transform and think about what the box might be used for: keeping jewelry, maybe, or secret letters or makeup.
2. Paint your box with one layer of color and let it dry.
3. Glue different pieces of magazines, photos or fabric on all surfaces (inside and out) of the box.
4. Glue marbles, beads or rubber toys to the outside (or inside) of the box.
5. Create a text message with different letters cut out from a newspaper or magazine and glue it on the lid of the box.
6. When you are done, dilute Elmers glue with some water and brush the top of container to give it a shiny look. Let it dry.
