choosing a film school

Film school graduates don't tend to find jobs in "the biz" right away; making it in Hollywood involves a lot of grunt work. But most professional filmmakers were trained at film school.

If you do choose to go to film school, find out what you can about the various programs ahead of time. Some emphasize narrative and training students for the movie industry, while others encourage students to experiment. Some offer video as a major, while others go for a more combined program, with some film and some video. Most offer film and media theory, which can give you not just history but ideas for your own films.

When you're asking questions of your prospective school, remember that you want to learn production and editing early on. Also find out what kinds of majors they offer and whether they have equipment available for students to use.
