What are zines?
Zines are independently produced, photocopied booklets that often contain original artwork, journal entries, poetry, fiction, political writing or all of the above.
Who writes zines and where can I find them?
Anyone! Create your own media if you feel you are not being heard! Many people feel empowered through their zines. There are tons of zinesters out there. You can often find their zines in record stores or bookstores, or online.
Is this a good idea?
Writing and maintaining a zine is a lot of work, but it can be rewarding when you form a real connection with other people through your work. Depending on how many copies you make, the cost of copying an issue can average around $15 to $30, plus the cost of envelopes and stamps if you want to mail it out. Sometimes the process is extremely annoying and hectic, and it can seem ridiculous to put so much time and effort into something that few people see. But I have been making zines for six years now and I cannot stop. I just find that I express myself much more easily on paper, and that sharing my work with others is good for me.
