Prizes & Fees
Tournaments are just as varied as jellybeans. Some tournaments are free entry, where as others can charge as much as they deem necessary. Usually the prize money dictates the entry fee. The bigger the prizes, the more money it costs to get in.
Local tournaments generally cost about $20 per person. Major League Gaming costs $50 per person. CPL and the World Series of Video Games are $50-$100 per person. Online tournaments, however, are usually free or really cheap.
Tournaments offer an array of prizes. Local tournaments may offer money prizes or game products, but bigger tournaments cash out in the thousands. The prize could be $5,000 or as large as $150,000. Usually the biggest payouts are at events that happen only once a year, but collecting a few thousand dollars every month will eventually add up.

Teams
Teams can consist of 4-8 people depending on the game. For example, Halo 2 teams are generally four people; Counter-strike teams are generally five people; and Battlefield teams are usually eight people. However, there are some exceptions to the rules. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, for example, was in professional tournaments in mid-2006 and was played with two person teams.
Gaming groups, if referring to clans, usually don't charge members for their participation. These groups are built to play together as teams. If the clan or team is managed by an agent, then, on a case-by-case basis, the agent will take a small cut of the revenues earned by the team.
