Founded: In 1961, the Universalists (1793) and the Unitarians (1825) were consolidated
Beliefs:
Although many Unitarians also consider themselves Christians, many do not consider themselves part of any particular denomination. It is based on the idea of being open minded about religion and religious questions. Religious authority is thus found in the individual, rather than in a figure, scripture or organization.
Unitarians believe that the truth is constantly being revealed, and that understanding of the world is not final. There is always something new to learn or understand. Every person must do this learning for him or herself, and everyone is regarded as equal. Every person is also expected to act ethically.
Today:
Congregations govern themselves, rather than being governed by a larger body. Each church is responsible for its own laws, officers and budget, and every member may take part in church activities.
