Beliefs:
Atheism can refer either to the definite belief that there is no deity whatsoever, or to lack of belief in a deity. Since there is obviously no single ideology or text governing the beliefs of atheists, they are highly personal and diverse. Morality systems tend to come from secular or societal factors, rather than religious beliefs, and many atheists believe in the concept of the natural/scientific development of the world.
History:
The term "Atheist" didn't originate until the 16th century, but there were certainly atheists long before then. For example, some historians believe that Socrates was an atheist.
Today:
Although atheists represent a minority in regards to other religions, there are still over 200 million people who consider themselves Atheists. While Atheists are all over the world, many are located in Western Europe. For example, 85 % of Swedes do not believe in any type of God.
Atheists are also under constant attacks by those of other religions and have been accused of aiding the development of poor morals and deviant behavior.
