What & Who
In 1913, Luigi Russolo wrote an essay called "The Art of Noises." He thought the best way to celebrate technology was to use steam engines, trains, saws, car horns, etc in music. If you think that sounds crazy, don't worry. Many people do. What's wrong with guitars anyway, right?

The idea of using nonmusical things to make music really picked up in the mid-1970s. Pioneering bands like Throbbing Gristle and Skinny Puppy were the first ones to be called industrial. Their music, like many of the industrial acts after them, contained noisy samples, loud, sharp percussion and heavily distorted instruments. During the 1980s and into the 1990s, instruments became a bigger part of the genre with bands like Cabaret Voltaire and the German art-rock band, Einsturzende Neubauten.

Etc...
Industrial influences can be found in a lot of different genres, like heavy metal ( KMFDM) and Goth (Wumpscut).
