1980s
return of the cup
Menstrual cups weren't a huge hit when they first appeared in America in the late 1800s. But with the popularity of internal menstrual products today (like tampons), women are more likely to use the cup now than ever before.
In 1970, a disposable version of the menstrual cup made a comeback, and today, menstrual cups come in a variety of types: "The Keeper" cup made of natural gum rubber which can be re-used up to ten years, the one-time-use "Instead" cup, the British "Mooncup," the Canadian "DivaCup" made of silicone and the Finnish "Lunette" cup.
Many people encourage using cups over tampons or pads because they are much cheaper, some costing only $4 a YEAR, and are better for the environment since they can be sterilized and reused.
