What Does Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (ED-NOS) Mean?
Even if someone doesn't have all the characteristics of an eating disorder, they could be suffering from Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (ED-NOS). People diagnosed with ED-NOS have abnormal eating, but don't meet the medical requirements for an eating disorder.

In order to be diagnosed with anorexia, a person must weigh at least 15% below the normal body weight for their age and height, miss at least three consecutive periods and truly believe they are fat when they are actually extremely underweight. Diagnosed bulimics lack control over their eating habits and purge at least twice a week, on average, for at least three months.

People with ED-NOS often have many symptoms of eating disorders. For example, they may be underweight and feel fat, but still get their period, or may binge and purge only once a week. Another form of ED-NOS is chewing food and spitting it out instead of swallowing. Just because someone isn't diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia doesn't mean they don't have a problem.
