Adventure Guide

For those of you who like living on the edge, try being an adventure guide. If you're looking for a job that's physically challenging you might want to do what Nate St. Saviour does, navigating whitewater rapids. This job is great for those who aren't afraid to get their feet wet (literally).

"I just wanted to do what I like the most," he says. "I like to be outdoors, to ski, to hike and to kayak."

So that's what St. Saviour, who studied adventure recreation and commercial recreation management at Green Mountain College, does as an adventure guide for Adventure Bound and Northern Outdoors in Maine.

"Some days I'll whitewater raft, take people down the river, through rapids, make lunch...you're their guide through the river, and you steer the boat."

Other times, he'll kayak behind a boat of whitewater rafting tourists, edit the footage and sell the finished tape as a souvenir. He also leads rock climbing and overnight rafting trips, does rope courses and coaches ski racing in the winter.

If you work in adventure recreation, prepare for long weeks and no promise of weekends off. Jobs are often seasonal.

"It's fun to spend most of your day outside," St. Saviour says, "and I'm working with kids, so you're doing something that's enjoyable and are teaching it to other people who are excited about it."
