Therapy vs. Mood Medication
<<return to table of contents

Sometimes it's necessary to see a psychiatrist and begin medication (only a psychiatrist can prescribe medication). Medication may help you deal with your problems or give you enough of a boost to want to get help; however everyone has their own opinions on the subject. (You can check out what other gURLs have to say about mood medication here.),

You may only need to take medication or do a combination of medication and therapy. Medication is used for chemical imbalances, which are the root of the problem for many disorders--and while they can control symptoms, they cannot cure a mental disorder.

Before you begin any medication, find out about possible side effects and what other options are available. Medication is not necessarily right for everybody. For more information about medication pertaining to specific disorders, visit the National Institute for Mental Health.
