The story...
This job's specialty purpose, as part of the realm of public relations, is to strengthen an organization's relationship with the community. This is done through ongoing, active participation of the business, government, or nonprofit organization with the community.
The activities of a community relations program are based upon the belief that the quality of life for one person is influenced by experiences they share with other people and businesses in their communities. Community relations involves the flow of information, both positive and negative, about an organization to maximize favorable opinion and minimize obstacles to success.
Often a community relations manager deals with issues that directly affect the general public. These include health, energy or the environmental concerns and the steps an organization takes to advance or address them.
To work as a community relations manager...
This line of work requires a background in communications, but a much broader understanding of society is also very helpful. Liberal Arts courses in political science, sociology and business administration can also prep for community relations work.
