When a prism catches the light just right, it dazzles. Similarly, when you strike just the right pose, the hidden message in this skirt is brought to light. Think of it as your message in a bottle. Stencil a greeting, a picture, a pattern or an SOS on the side of the skirt. Some ideas: a skull and crossbones, a heart, a comet, an anchor, the words "ROCK" or "DORK," or your name or the name of your favorite team (Go Sox!). Use the point of your scissors to get your point across.

Ingredients:
  • 2 T-shirts (L or XL, in different colors)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
  • Tailor?fs chalk
  • Needle
  • Thread

    Instructions:
  • Turn both t-shirts inside out and lay them flat. Cut straight across the front of each shirt just below the armholes to make two rectangular tubes of fabric. Trim off the hems of both tubes.
  • Divide your waist measurement by 2 (x). (Example: If your waist is 34", you?fll be using a length of 17".) Layer the two tubes on top of each other and center the length x across the top. Mark both sides (left and right) of the measurement and draw diagonal lines from those marks to the bottom corners of the rectangle. Cut along those lines, through all four layers, creating a trapezoid shape.
  • Separate the layers and pin the front and back of each shirt together along the angled edges of the two trapezoids. Cut 2" off the bottom of the t-shirt that you want to use as the outer layer.
  • Sew along the pinned edges using a whipstitch. Remove pins.
  • Turn both skirts right side out. Take the shorter skirt and sketch the letters of a word (or image) you?fd like to see on it.
  • Along the chalk lines, use a scissor point to poke (or snip) small holes, no larger than G", about I" apart.
  • When you?fve finished poking and snipping, insert the longer skirt inside the shorter one (right sides out and side seams aligned) and pin them together at the waist.
  • Use a zigzag stitch or a whipstitch to sew G" from the edge around the waist.
Optional: Tack the skirt layers in place by sewing through both skirts along the side seams using a running stitch.
  • Try on the skirt so that the color of the underskirt is revealed through the snipped holes in the overskirt.

  • Variations:

Brainstorm more hidden message ideas and personalize skirts for your friends. Try a constellation (your astrological sign), Xs and Os, or zigzags.

For an edgier look, cut the top skirt layer on an angle.

For a no sew version, use smaller shirts that hug your hips so you avoid having to sew up the sides. Along the waistbands of both skirts and starting 1" from the edge, make I"-deep vertical cuts about 3" apart. Thread a drawstring in and out of the holes (through both layers), binding the two skirts together, and tie the ends in a bow.
