What
Country music has roots in folk as well as in blues. Country music includes a few sub-genres like the faster, more instrumental bluegrass, the Bakersville sound (popularized by Merle Haggard), pre-30's old-time and honky-tonk like Hank Williams and Garth Brooks.

Who
Jimmie Rogers is credited with being one of the founders of country music. He sang about the experiences of his and other people's lives in a way ordinary people could understand. Like his followers, Rogers sang about suffering, booze and women. When Johnny Cash sang, "I killed a man in Reno just to watch him die," you didn't need a dictionary to figure out the lyrics. That's the straightforwardness, destitution and songwriting for ordinary people that Rogers demonstrated.

Of course, there are the kick ass women who suffered as well. Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, June Carter Cash and Dolly Parton were all influential for modern country singers like Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks, who rock the fiddle Charlie Daniels style.
