Getting Started

I'm really interested in being a dj. I was wondering what I could do to get started?
--Joanna Lei

Age really does not matter when it comes to deejaying, but buying equipment can be a problem no matter what your age.

The least expensiv e way to go right now is to buy a dj start up kit, which includes two turntables, a mixer, speakers and a pair of headphones for prices as low as $500. The only problem with these kits is that you get what you pay for. It's an inexpensive way to start, but not a good investment.

Or you can buy equipment separately:

A pair of used TECHNICS turntables are usually a better bet than some other new brands. Used TECHNICS turntables can run from $400-600 a pair. You can look for used equipment in record shops, electronic equipment stores and advertisements in the paper.

Any mixer will do when you're first starting. The simpler, the better. A brand new two channel mixer with separate EQs can run as low as $200.

Good headphones make a world of difference. You can get a pair of Pioneer or Technique headphones for $120.

Amplifiers and speakers can run you a little bit of money, but most times you can just plug your equipment into your home stereo system. (Warning, this does not sound the best, but it is cheap! Just be careful not to blow your system.)
