The Knit Stitch

There are many different types of stitches that can be done with knitting needles, but the one that is the basis of them all is called "knit."

1. Hold the needle with the stitches on it in your left hand. Insert the point of the right needle into the first stitch from front to back underneath the left needle. [see diagram 8]

2. With your right index finger, bring yarn under and over the point of the right needle. [see diagram 9]

3. Pull the yarn on the right needle through the stitch on the left needle [see diagram 10]

4. Now this is different than casting on, so pay attention: Slip the loop OFF of the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right

That is one complete knit stitch! Repeat those steps until all the stitches from the left needle are gone, and new ones have built up on the right needle. That means you have completed one row of knitting.

To continue, switch the needles so that the one with the stitches is again in your left hand and start another row. At the beginning of a row, the stitches will always be on your left needle, and by the end they should all be on your right needle.
