Use the following terms to convince your parents you're serious about singing, and that last year's obsession with snowboarding (or gymnastics or basket-weaving or harp lessons) was just a phase...Seriously, though, it is important to know these terms and be able to use them confidently. The usage of these terms is how fellow singers and musicians communicate with each other, and these terms clarify verbally what you're trying to convey musically.
Acoustics: the qualities or characteristics of a room, auditorium, etc., that determines the audibility of sounds in it
Alto: the lowest female voice (think Alanis or Pink)
Arpeggio: the sounding of the notes of a chord in rapid succession instead of simultaneously
Baritone: the type of male voice that lies between bass and tenor (like Bono or Elvis)
Bass: the lowest voice in harmony (like Barry White singing "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe")
