changing the oil

Why do I need to change my oil, what is it, how often, and how do I do it if I want to? These are all common questions for first time car owners.

Oil is the lubricant that keeps your engine running. It doesn't last forever and begins to break down as it gets older. Think of changing your oil like filling up for gas, your car won't run if you don't do it.

Oil is the same thing, just not as often. Follow your owner's manual to determine how often to change your oil, but a good rule of thumb is every 5,000 miles. If you don't change your oil as recommended, you could end up needing a new engine or even new car!

There are many places to get your oil changed: the car dealership, Jiffy Lube, your local mechanic, you can even do it yourself. If you want to tackle the adventure of changing your own oil, it's not as hard as you think. Find out how to change your oil.

In the meantime, be sure to check your car's oil levels frequently and change it when it gets old. Be on the lookout for any leaks, too, that could be draining your oil. Oil doesn't get used up or go anywhere, so if your oil level is low, there's probably a leak.
