buying a car (continued)

Pre-Owned Cars
Pre-owned cars are often a better a value than new cars. There are trade-offs though. Less selection means more time searching. But finding that perfect pre-owned car is like hitting gold at the thrift store.

Pre-owned cars for sale are everywhere. Where to look depends on what you want. All car dealerships carry pre-owned cars. This is a good option because they are usually somewhat new and still have their original warranty.

Some dealers sell Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) cars. CPO means the mechanic has inspected the car and it's good to go. Buying a CPO is like buying a new car, you get reliability and warranty.

Another good place to shop for a pre-owned car is a dealership that only sells used cars. You might be able to find one at Carmax.com. Also, check out car rental companies since they sell some of their vehicles too.

Tip: A deal that seems too good to be true often is. Buying a car from a private party (neighbor, uncle, some guy across town) is a risky venture.

  • Be patient
  • Bring an expert along to check out any problems with the car
  • Try not to buy on the spot
  • Once you find something you like, jot down the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), then go home and do some research:

  • Check out Kelly Blue Book or Nada Guides to see how much the car is worth (and make sure you're not getting ripped off, or, even better, getting a great deal).
  • Run the VIN through Carfax.com. This is like doing a background check on a car. If you see accidents or major damage, move on.
