Acting can take more forms than just appearing on the big screen. Just ask Colby Baker. When Baker was a junior at the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, he landed the role Mr. Mushnik in the high school production of Little Shop of Horrors. Baker says that his experience playing the failing Skid Row flower shop owner sparked his deep interest in theater. In addition to performing in high school and university productions, he worked two seasons at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival.

Baker says that a college education is a vital prerequisite for entering a career in theater. "So many people rely on their talent alone to pull them through their acting career," he says. "At school, there are so many productions. They provide experience that is invaluable, and what's more rewarding than getting out of school and saying, 'I'm a trained actor!'"

Baker, a 2003 graduate of Southern Utah University, majored in theater with a dance minor. He recommends that once you're out of school, you should take advantage of continuing education workshops. Baker is a member of the Society of American Fight Directors, which cultivates his stage combat training (you'll see why in a minute!).

Today, Baker enjoys a steady career as an actor for Royal Productions Inc.'s "Tournament of Kings" show at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

In the medieval-themed show, twice each night Baker plays a chivalrous knight who rides his noble steed as he performs in a tournament competition before a cheering crowd of 900 people. This is more than just an ordinary acting job. It's one that requires precision, talent and calculating skill in sword fighting, horse handling and horseback combat.

While you might not find yourself in full-armor, the skills that Baker picked up in school--and after--could be used in any acting-related profession. Remember, knowing your craft inside and out can help you score the role you've been dreaming about.
