Since HTML uses characters like "&" and ">" as part of it's code, you'll find that you can't use those characters as text in some places where HTML is used. Because of that, there are HTML codes for special characters.
Use special character codes without brackets, like this:
Me & my best friend dyed our hair the same color! I ♥ matching hairdos. |
Me & my best friend dyed out hair the same color! I ♥ matching hairdos.

(Note: If you can't see some characters, such as the heart in the example above, it's not your fault: it's your browser. Some new browsers, like Mozilla Firefox, don't read some special characters. Why? Who knows! Welcome to the crazy world of HTML...)
