Since HTML uses characters like "&" and ">" as part of it's code, you'll find that you can't use those characters as text in some places where HTML is used. Because of that, there are HTML codes for special characters.

Use special character codes without brackets, like this:

Me &#38; my best friend dyed our hair the same color! I &hearts; matching hairdos.

Me & my best friend dyed out hair the same color! I ♥ matching hairdos.
