<< back to menuWhat are you trying to say?
As you create your comic, it might help to ask yourself "what's the point?" Are you trying to tell it like it is, posit a new theory on the meaning of life or just make people laugh? Figuring out your communication goals in advance will help you develop your ideas and give you focus.
What kind of story do you want to tell...
personal?
historical?
philosophical?
funny?
opinionated?
something else entirely?
What do you want to see?
Do you like to draw animals? Are you good at it? Then maybe you should try making a comic about...(you guessed it) animals! The same goes for futuristic spaceships or macaroni salad.
What's your sensibility?
Are you funny, dark, cutesy, sarcastic, political or a mixture of some or all of these? Allow your true voice to come through in your work. Go with what feels natural to you.
Find your inspiration
Here are a few common ways people get their creative juices flowing. Maybe some of these methods will work for you.
Leave your room:
go to the library
visit a museum
stroll through your neighborhood
relax in a park or natural setting
talk with people who seem different from you
eavesdrop on conversations
parachute out of an airplane (just don't get so lost in thought you forget to pull the ripcord.)
Think about:
your family
your friends (and enemies)
your love life (or lack of one)
important events in your life
funny stuff that has happened to you or someone you know
Brainstorm:
write everything that comes to your mind without editing anything
think "what if..."
try to combine unrelated ideas and things to create something new. For example: futuristic spaceships and macaroni salad.
Do Research:
art history
religions and philosophies
pop culture. Including other comic artists
world societies
politics
anything, really (as long as you're interested in it)
