Eugene Lang College, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City, is the undergraduate liberal arts division of New School University. The best words to describe both the college and the student body would have to be "political" and "creative." "Tiny" would probably come in third, as there are only about 500 students and full-time faculty are very few.

Classes at Lang aren't your traditional English and Math 101s. Selections from the course catalog include Poetry as Public Act; Drugs, Youth, Sex and Society; and Dream Interpretation. When it comes to class time, don't expect to be able to just sit back; classes are seminars and participation in the discussions is expected. Also, be prepared to write a lot of papers. Traditional tests are few and far between.

The biggest drawback as far as classes go is the insane registration process. Class size is capped at 15 so there's a good chance you won't get your first choice. The administration can also be a pain. Getting face time with one of the three deans can be hard and it's something that you'll need to do more than you'd expect.

Although Lang boasts that it welcomes students of all political beliefs, you probably won't find that to be true in the classroom. Most Lang students are aligned with one or more progressive causes, and more attention is paid in the curriculum to marginalized voices than at most schools. Also, if you're looking for sports, Lang isn't the place for you. The closest most Lang students come to sports is competitive chain smoking in the courtyard.

Lang has a high proportion of female students and there's a large and well-accepted gay/lesbian population as well. This isn't to say that everyone is totally tolerant and everything is perfect--it's not. But hey, students are constantly fighting to make things better, there are a lot of great teachers and you're in the heart of New York City.
