Genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, is a traditional practice that involves the partial or complete removal of a prepubescent girl's clitoris. It is mainly done in African countries and can be voluntary or involuntary. This practice is highly debated because of the clash of human rights and cultural norms.
While women and human rights activists think this practice should be eliminated, there are those who believe it holds cultural and traditional significance. According to Amnesty International, about two million girls are at risk of female genital mutilation every year. Only nine countries have specific legislation outlawing female genital mutilation.
