Some people think "homosexual" sounds too clinical and prefer to use other words. The term "gay" is often used to describe homosexual men, while the term "lesbian" refers to homosexual women. Some slang words used to describe homosexuality are: fruity, flamer, queer, fag and dyke. While all of these terms are considered derogatory for the most part, some in the gay community have reclaimed them. For example, a homosexual woman may refer to herself as a dyke.
"Coming out" is when people reveal their sexuality to others. As a person starts to understand his or her sexuality more fully, and becomes comfortable with it, he or she may tell family and friends. It can be a risky and scary process. Despite this, many gay men and women often find that coming out is a huge relief. They are finally free to enjoy and explore their sexuality, and be themselves.
