Scientists aren't exactly sure what causes bipolar disorder. However, many studies have found that this condition is often genetic, with patients having one or more parents with a history of mental illness or severe depression. For example, a patient with one parent who is bipolar has a 15% to 30% chance of being diagnosed with the disorder, while those who have both parents affected have a 50% to 75% chance of diagnosis.
