There is a link between tampon use and TSS infections. High-absorbent tampons help block bacteria in the vagina, making it easy for bacteria to grow quickly. (Certain bacteria produce toxins that can be absorbed by the body.) In 1980, there was an epidemic of women in the US suffering from menstrual-related TSS, in which hundreds were infected and 38 women died from the infection.
Eventually, the Center for Disease and Control was able to link super-absorbent tampons to higher TSS risk. Today, all tampon labels include TSS warning signs, as well as a note suggesting the use of sanitary napkins as opposed to tampons.
