TSS occurs suddenly and grows quickly. Symptoms of TSS usually feel like those of a severe flu and include:

- sunburn-like or red dot rashes
- headaches
- vomiting
- dizziness
- confusion
- cramping
Some people also experience swelling in the vaginal area, hands and feet. They may develop a sore throat and muscle pain. Usually, people experience a 2-3 day period of mild symptoms before they develop the disease.
