Article Image Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of cervical cancer. HPV is generally spread through sex. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every four women ages 14 to 59 are infected with HPV, but it only leads to cancer in about one in 30 women. The study also showed that HPV is most common in women ages 20 to 24.

In Europe, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer in women between the ages of 15 and 44 and approximately 40 women die of the disease per day in Europe.
