Article Image Suicide can occur with little or no warning. However, most people who commit suicide do leave signs and share certain behavioral traits or actions. Some of the warning signs that an individual may be contemplating suicide are:
  • Talking about suicide (killing one's self)
  • Always talking or thinking about death
  • Making comments about being hopeless, helpless or worthless
  • Saying things like "It would be better if I wasn't here" or "I want out"
  • Depression (deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating)
  • A sudden, unexpected switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy
  • Losing interest in things one used to care about
  • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye
  • Putting affairs in order, tying up lose ends, changing a will
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities
  • Violent actions, rebellious behavior or running away
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Unusual neglect of personal appearance
  • Marked personality change
  • Persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or a decline in the quality of schoolwork
  • Frequent complaints about physical symptoms
